About Me
I am a graduate architect turned analyst who started a life of creative problem-solving as a scrawny 4-year-old continually asking “why”. As a business owner, I am a Jack-of-All-Trades.
I began my journey with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from MARA University of Technology, Malaysia. After working endless nights in residential architecture, I then pursued a Master of Architecture from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
In my final year at Strathclyde, I decided to address an issue that had interested me since my first year in architecture school. At that time, a couple of my lecturers had volunteered with Mercy Malaysia, providing expertise on the reconstruction stage in post-tsunami Aceh.
My trip to Banda Aceh and the subsequent research and proposal that followed inspired this website. Here is the story of Smong // tsunami:
In 1907, an earthquake shook Simeuleu Island, off the west coast of Aceh. When the sea subsided, many villagers went out to collect the fishes that lie stranded on the beach. Many perished in the oncoming tsunami. Since then, this local wisdom passed down from one generation to the next. They appear in the form of a song, poem, or folklore. In 2004, the sea subsided once again on Simeuleu Island. But, unlike in mainland Aceh, the islanders knew instinctively to run to the hills // lari ke bukit.
I believe that stories help shape our problem statements, challenge our presumptions, and drive our design thinking processes to seek out better solutions to global issues.
At the moment, I am looking for a career transition into data science. Coming from an architectural background, I find it second nature to work with data explorations, visualizations, modelling, and data storytelling.
Outside of design and data, I love travelling to meet new people and to learn about other cultures. I am also a singer-songwriter.
I am currently based in Malaysia.
