Land and Rights to the City

In the aftermath of a large-scale disaster, land ownership issues are one of the problems facing reconstruction efforts in a city. In Banda Aceh post-tsunami of 2004, the new master plan proposed a coastal zone, a fishing zone, and a restricted settlement zone. The fishing zone extends many kilometers inland into the harbor area of Banda Aceh. This proposal affected the livelihood of the fishing community, which made them abandon their newly located housing and moved back to the coast.

This thesis addresses the issue by proposing disaster mitigation strategies in redeveloping land in the coastal area, thus allowing the communities to reclaim ownership of their land.
